Brondesbury Pocket Park
a co-design project with the community
Location:
London, United Kingdom
Client:
Love Brondesbury /
Brent Council
Year:
2022
This project was co-designed in collaboration with local residents, the Love Brondesbury charity, and supported by Brent Council. Funding was secured through the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) and the Our Space ‘Re-greening’ Communities Award.
Brondesbury Villas is a tranquil road, bordered by houses on one side and a railway line and pocket park on the other. Over time, this pocket park fell into neglect, becoming an unwelcoming and intimidating space. We were tasked with transforming it into a vibrant park through community consultations and presentations that guided and shaped the design.
The scheme reimagines the park as an immersive landscape, with horticulture taking the lead. The new layout includes clearly defined zones, each offering various opportunities for social interaction and creative play. Layers of tarmac have been replaced with a meandering path of porous, self-binding gravel, giving it a fresh, natural appearance. The gentle slope ensures wheelchair accessibility without assistance. Existing mature trees and hedges have been preserved, complemented by a row of newly planted flowering trees as vertical focal points. The diverse planting will feature plants selected for their tolerance to drought and urban conditions, providing scale and sensory experiences through scent, color, and texture.
